Fans of hip hop know why it began, we know where it went, who it took where. We also know it has been redirected by incentives and interests opposed to its original purpose in every way except control and monetization. So we invite those who haven’t heard the warnings and critiques from three emcees who documented what was being lost: these are in their own words, on the record, for anyone willing to listen.
Knowledge means nothing if we don’t pass it.
2003 — Guru
Guru of Gang Starr sat for an interview with MVRemix Urban. He had been making music for nearly two decades. He was asked what Gang Starr represented.
His answer was specific.
“Street knowledge, intellect, and spirituality. Street knowledge—I am talking about survival out here. If you are a grown ass man or woman, it is on you to have a thirst for knowledge and to seek out to find the answers to your questions. That’s what Gangstarr is about. We’re like a survival kit.”
On the culture itself he was equally direct.
“People are renting and leasing hip hop. They are trying to hustle the culture. That is something you can’t do. That will always backfire on you. With us, we don’t have to give anything back because we never borrowed anything. We are self-contained. We own our sh*t.”

2015 — Lupe Fiasco
Lupe Fiasco published an open letter he called “The Haunting.”
“Modern Radio and the commercial realm of music has injured rap. It set up ambiguous rules and systems for success that don’t take into consideration the quality and skill of the rapper’s craft. It redefined rap as just being a beat driven hook with some words in between and an entire generation has surrendered to chasing the format instead of chasing the art form.”
His own experience with the industry documented the mechanism behind that injury.
“The issue was who controlled those records and what the ownership and splits were. Atlantic would only promote my records if they owned a large portion of them or if I signed a 360 deal.”

2021 — Black Thought
Black Thought sat for an interview with The Paris Review.
“When I’m able to pause and breathe and reflect, becoming one with the music and with the universe, everything just writes itself. The best art — all of that just comes from the universe. You have to master the art of being in tune enough when it’s time to create.”
In a documented interview that has been cited across hip hop media since at least 2017, Black Thought was direct about what he and The Roots had always stood for.
“I don’t think there’s no rapper more street than me. I’m street Street. I’d rather wear my intelligence and my artistry on my sleeve.”
The Record
Three emcees. Three eras. One documented message.
Street knowledge. Intellect. Spirituality. Own the culture. Pass the knowledge. Resist the format. Stay true to the art form.
Hip hop’s market share peaked at approximately 30 percent in 2020. By 2025 it had declined to approximately 24 percent. In October 2025 there were zero rap songs in the Billboard Top 40 for the first time in 35 years.
